Activities and Things to do in Swansea, Mumbles & on the Gower Peninsula

The walk into Mumbles takes about fifteen minutes, either over Mumbles Hill, where there are interesting remains of WW2 gun emplacements, on the coast road or down the steep, narrow Thistleboon Road with its quaint houses, just past Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones’ house. This leads to the Southend of Mumbles, which has many stepped streets of old fishermens’ cottages.

Mumbles is named for the two round islands which rise at the end of the rocky promontory, which made people think of breasts! So they were either named by the Romans (latin for breasts being mamma) or the Normans (French for breasts being mammelles) It has many small boutique style shops, as well as banks and supermarkets, a seaside chidren's play area and clock golf. Oystermouth Castle built around 1100 is a great place to visit. It was visited by King Edward 1 in 1284. There is a very good fish and chip shop opposite the castle and the grounds have seats and public toilets. The castle grounds also have outdoor Shakespeare productions in the summer.

The City of Swansea is nearby with a wealth of activities, from the fantastic new leisure centre LC2, and other swimming pools, theatres, multi screen cinemas,  museums, shops, galleries etc. Swansea was named Sweyns’s probably after the Viking Sweyne Forkbeard who was briefly king between 1013 -1014. It was a famous trading post. The more modern name of Abertawe means mouth of the Tawe river, which enters the sea at this point. Swansea also has a castle which unfortunately, has been left to decay.

In the area there is a golf course, surfing, jet skiing, horseriding, boat trips, windsurfing, sailing, sea fishing  etc.
